In the tradition of award shows every way, we at Stacks would like to recognized those series that are no longer with us. They have ended. They and solved all their mysteries and tied up any loose ends. We were said to see them go but they will always be remembered for the joy that brought to our lives.
***Spoilers Ahead***
The Last Star and The Countdown and the final books in trilogies about aliens coming to Earth but that’s really where the similarities end. The Last Star is the finale to The 5th Wave, which follows a few teenage survivors after first four waves of an Alien invasion. Billions have people have already died, leaving Cassie, Zombie, Sam, Ringer and Evan as humanities last stand. Meanwhile, The Taking Trilogy, explores alien abductions and the possibility that those responsible are on their way. The 5th Wave is far more epic in scale and more ambitious but not necessarily as entertaining. The first book I thought was fantastic but was underwhelm by the follow The Infinite Sea. The Taking was okay but as the series went on it got better. Not the best series I’ve read but entertaining. Reading both series so close together gave me a chance to read different views on Aliens. Are they hostile? Do they come in peace? How do they go around getting a foothold into Earth. They both have a very different approach to those questions as the The 5th Wave also piggybacks on the latest trend of YA Dystopia as well as sci-fi. The Taking is really more of your standard YA fare with aliens in the background. It still explores the trials of youth and romance and of course a love triangle.

Let’s see how this ends.
My to-read pile is going to get a little bit of work out in the next couple of weeks. Not only is the The Raven King finally coming (just in case you haven’t heard) but several other books I’ve been waiting to read are also coming out. Apparently May 3 is the day to release books with four books on my list. It’s also the time for series to end with The Raven Cycle, The 5th Wave, The Selection, and the Taking series are all coming into their conclusions. It’s strange how so many of my series are ending this year but I guess that’s just the way it worked out. This is all great but I wish they all were spaced out a little bit. I can only read so much at a time.

It’s 2016! Happy New Years!! A new year means new books! And we love new books even if they just add to our TBR pile. So here a 10 books that I’m super excited to read in 2016!
And so many more books I want to read and not to mention try to complete our reading challenges. It’s going to be a busy reading year. How about you? What books are you looking forward to reading this year?
And we are back. Well, I am. As I’m writing this Kate is on a plane on her way home. New Orleans was great! We both had a lot of fun. It’s such a chill city. It was a lot of fun walking around and seeing the sights. I do hope we get to go back again some day.
But back to business. The movie adaption of Insurgent by Veronica Roth comes out tomorrow. I have mixed feelings about the movie of Divergent, I overall liked it but I have reservations about this one. First the trailer makes it pretty clear they did some major changes and I’m not sure if that’s going to be good or bad. Insurgent was a hard book to read because Tris suffers from PTSD and no one tries to help her and it was beyond frustrating. I’m not sure how that will play on screen or if they will sort of gloss over it kinda like they did with Katniss in Mockingay Part 1. I guess I’ll find out when I see it later this or next week.
There are other YA movie adaptations coming soon that I’m pretty excited. Of course Mockingjay Part 2. That’s definitely going to be brutal. Moviefone highlighted a few that are in the works. Some that I knew of like The 5th Wave and Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. The former should make a good movie and the latter, well hopefully with Tim Burton at the helm it will be better then the book. I didn’t know that Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Grasshopper Jungle, Immortal Rules and Shadow and Bone have all been optioned. That’s awesome! I think both Kate and I have said how much we loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. That will be really interesting to see how that plays out on the big screen. Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa is excellent Vampire Dystopian novel. I also think that Smoke and Bone by Leigh Bardugo is being produced by David Heyman of Harry Potter fame. So I have a lot faith that will be well done. And Edgar Wright is attached to direct Grasshopper Jungle? Yes please! I know we have talked a lot about this book lately and it’s flaws but it was an entertaining book and I actually think if done right will make a better movie.
So book fans, we have a lot of good books being made into movies in the upcoming years. Let’s hope that they are all more like Harry Potter and Hunger Games and less like The Giver or Percy Jackson.
P.S. Not mentioned in the article but Maggie Stiefvater’s Scorpio Races and Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor and Park have also been optioned. I’m not sure where Scorpio Races is in development but I do know that Miss Rowell was asked to write the screenplay for Eleanor and Park and well I can’t wait for both of these!
