With the announcement of the fourth installment of this series, I decided it was time I got back into it.

Cover Reveal: The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater
The final book in Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle, The Raven King was supposed to be released later this month. Unfortunately, Maggie said that she needed more time for editing so it has been pushed back until April. Gah! Five more months! What are we going to do? Well for now we are going to have to console ourselves with gazing at the gorgeous cover of The Raven King, revealed yesterday.

Like the covers of the previous books it’s beautiful but doesn’t give much of way of plot or clues besides a deer will somehow play a part in the story. In the meantime, we all can spend time theorizing over what is going to happen. Are Blue and Gansey finally going to kiss and be the doom Gansey? Are Ronan and Adam going to get together? What about Maura and Butterscotch? Will they find Glendower? And what is up with Henry and what role does he have in all of this? Stay Strong. April will be here before we know it.
It’s the first of November, and so today someone will die

Since it’s the November 1 I thought we would take a moment and look at Maggie Stiefvater’s best book, The Scorpio Races. I mean all of her books are good but this one is the best. It’s filled with so much atmospheric goodness that’s it’s just luscious. Every year they race on the sea horses. Some live and some die. Sean is the defending champion. The youngest ever but much older then his years. Puck is the first girl to compete but circumstances make her take the chance. I can’t speak highly of this book and I’m sure that Kate would agree with me. If you are looking for a good book to read by the fire with some warm apple cider then you really can’t do any better then this.
Quick Review: The Anatomy of Curiosity by Maggie Stiefvater, Tessa Gratton and Brenna Yovanoff
Maggie Stiefvater, Tessa Gratton and Brenna Yovanoff are three successful authors on their own right but they are also each other critique partners. They call themselves the Merry Sisters of Fates. If you are familiar with our blog, then you already know about Maggie. I love her and obviously, I have read all of Maggie’s work. I have read some the works of Tessa and Brenna and have mix feelings about them. I really liked Brenna’s The Replacement but only so-so about Fiendish. I did enjoy both Tessa’s Blood Magic and Blood Keeper but for some reason have yet to pick up her latest series. Anyway, the three ladies used to post their short stories on their website but I think since all of their writing careers have taken off they haven’t had time to write that many. They all are very different writers with different styles, though they do all seem to stay on the fantasy side of literature. In The Anatomy of Curiosity they each wrote a short story displaying their personal theory on what is important in starting to build a story. Is it Character development, world building or the idea of a story. They all start at different places but still come up with great stories. Before each story, they go through their process and why they started where they did, why they made these choices and so forth. Through out the stories, they each write for asides as to why they used these words or choices, giving the reader a true insight into their thinking and process. After the story is over they other chime in with their notes. You can read all the notes or you can just read the stories and you will still get a great experience. For inspiring writers, this is a good tool to helping them with their decision making or for us readers, a chance to read some good short stories. Either way it’s a win.
Highs and Lows of Fandoms by Cassandra Clare and Maggie Stiefvater
I’ve actually never really been apart of a fandom per se. There are a lot of books, movies, TV shows that I love and care about. Despite my love for Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Magnus Bane, Katniss Everdeen and more, I’ve never signed up to any message boards or read fan fictions. I may have time to time read other fans blogs and theories about why a certain character did this or what they think will happen next but never really participated in it personally. Once upon a time, I was very involved in a i guess you could call a fandom for tennis player, Andy Roddick. Do athletes have fandoms? I started posting on a fan site called Roddickrocks.com. Soon, I was a board moderator and then I started writing recaps of Andy’s matches and got more involved from there. I spent a lot of time on Roddickrocks. It was the first site I checked in the morning and the last before I went to bed. It was almost a job, keeping up with the demands. After a year though, the site splintered. I have forgotten the exact details but some of us wanted to take the site in one direction and others wanted to keep as is. Feelings were hurt and relationships severed. A few of us started a new fan site but it didn’t last very long. I think the official reason in most of our minds was that we all got too busy. Most of us were in school or had real jobs and that started to take priority but really, as much as we tried, we could never recreate what we used to have.
Now that I think about it, this might be why I’m not much of a joiner online but really just a lurker. It’s not how I want to spend majority of my time online, these days but also it can get rather negative pretty quickly. I follow many authors on twitter and tumblr and there I get the gist of what is going on in the fandoms they created. I can see the other creative things my fellow readers are making and read thoughts and theories without have to truly have to participate. I’m not sure what that says about me but I do think it has lessens some of my online stress . Fandoms are great at uniting people from all over the world with like interests but it can also be toxic. I don’t regret the time I spent on Roddickrocks because it introduced me to some of the best people in the world that I still am friends with but I definitely do miss the negativity that surrounded the ending.
So why am I bringing this up? An author I follow, Cassandra Clare, decided to take a break from social media after the fandom she inspired sort of turned on her. Her books, The Mortal Instruments have been turned into a movie and now is being turned into a show. There was apparently a rift between fans who loved the old cast and fans who love the new cast. Clare decided not to take sides and was threatened by fans for it. Recently, she with another favorite author of mine, Maggie Stiefvater did an interview about the good and bad of fandoms and it’s a great read. They talk about how fandoms have changed. How twitter and tumblr help and hamper them. How they both want to accessible to fans but being too assessable comes with a price. How they are now treated by fans. They also talk about how that women in general are treated. It’s a well thought out discussion that I think is very valuable to read.
So please read it here and leave comment below about what you think? What are experiences in being apart of a fandom? Are like me and just lurk on the outside or do you actively participate? Sound off below.
What I’m Reading Now: Pip Barlett’s Guide to Magical Creatures by Maggie Stiefvater and Jackson Pearce and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

So the pdf file Scholastic provided for Pip Barlett’s Guide to Magical Creatures takes a while to load each page thanks to all of Maggie’s amazing illustrations so I’m reading that at home and Throne of Glass on the train.
RE: Sexism, Twitter and Giant Insects
One last thing on the whole Andrew Smith fiasco. Maggie Stiefvater said it best on twitter.

The author who said that Maggie was “more familiar with manly car things” was a female author. It’s also a pretty benign comment that probably wasn’t meant to be sexist but could be taken as that, just as Smith’s comments were. It goes both ways. That’s why we have to talk about. Sexism has become such a part of culture that we don’t even truly realize we do it.
Dear Stackologist: Life is Full of Tough Choices
Dear Stackologist,
I am married. I thought I would be happy to be married to my husband. He is exactly the type of man I should be married to as we come from the same background and status but he isn’t my true love. That belongs to my father’s ward. He would be unsuitable to marry, I know but we are kindred spirits. We used to run all over the moors together. I think what makes me the most unhappy is that my love has ran off with my husband’s sister and married her. I think I was much happier when he was mine and mine alone. Am I wrong to be so down? I just might die if I can’t have him.
Dear Moors,
First of all, I feel like you got married for the wrong reasons. While it might be important to please your family, this is your life and not theirs so if you are not happy with your husband then maybe it’s time for a divorce. Chances are, if you are not happy neither is he. As for your other issue, I’m not sure you really love him but want to possess him. That’s not exactly healthy. If he has gotten married, you should respect his decision but again I do worry about his reasons for marriage too but that’s for another letter. Also I’m a little worried about you saying you will die without him. No man is worth dying for. Life is full disappointments and you must learn to live with them. Nor can you expect someone to stay single just because you want them too. You moved on, you have to allow that they will move on, too.
Sincerely,
Stackologist
Dear Stackologist,
I really like this guy but we sort of met under unusual situation. He’s funny, and charming and also an addict. He traded in doing drugs and alcohol for another vice, so to speak, but he still partakes in self destructive behavior. I couldn’t take it. I could not stay and watch him destroy himself. So, I left. I moved to California with my Mom. I have my own problems to deal with like my brother’s death and my parent marital problems (they’re divorcing). I don’t need to his on top of that. I thought I was getting over him when one day he showed up at my job. Now all the feelings I had for him are back but I’m not sure I can trust him. He says he is no longer doing what he was doing but I just don’t know. I’m not sure I can let him back into my life.
Ugh. I can’t believe I’m one of those letter-writing girls
Dear Letter-Writer,
I think it’s brave that you saw that you were in a bad situation and you took yourself out of it. It’s not easy, especially when it involves someone that you care about. It sounds like you are going through a difficult time right now and by taking him out of the equation you are on the right path. I think this is one of those cases where the only person that can truly help them is them. It’s obviously difficult now that he is back in your life. You want to believe he is better and maybe he is but more importantly, how are you? Who is supporting you? Who is helping you cope with your brother’s death and your parents’ separation? I think you need to deal with you first before him. If he cares for you, then he will wait for to get yourself back together.

Books that Rocked My Face off, Part two
Kate has already posted her list. We have some of the same books in common but unlike my sister, I don’t have any qualms about reading only fiction and mostly teen fiction. There are a few non-fiction novels I do want to read. I’m quite interested in the Secret History of Wonder Woman. I’ll get to it eventually. Anyway, this is about what I read this year so let’s get on with it. I omitted a few books from contention because I read them as ARCs and they have not been released yet. That will have to be a post for another day.
1.Blue Lily Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater.
I love her. I might have mentioned that before but I really do love Maggie’s writing style. Blue Lily Lily Blue is the third book of her The Raven Cycle. The search for the Welsh King, Glendower, is back with more earnest as Blue’s Mom, Maura has gone missing. Blue, Gansey, Ronan, Adam and Noah all have grown up so much in the last three books and yet, if we know anything about Maggie, they have so much to learn before the series ends in the next book.
2.The Heroes of Olympus: The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan
I’m going to miss Percy, Annabeth, Nico, Leo, Hazel, Frank and Reina. I’ll even miss Jason and Piper too. They both did grow on me. I thought it was a fitting ending for a great series. As a team, the Heroes came together, defeated the Giants and brought the Greeks and Romans together. They all got a happy ending and there was a little bit of opening for some to return in Rick’s next series.
3. Landline by Rainbow Rowell
This was such a satisfying book. Georgie McCool is a TV screenwriter on a crappy show but she and her writing partner finally have a chance to get their own show going. The problem is they have to write six episodes over Christmas, meaning Georgie has to stay in LA, while her family goes to Omaha. Georgie’s marriage is already on thin ice; can it survive this? While spending the night in her old room at her Mom’s house, she plugs in her old landline phone and magically calls her husband Neal in the past. It soulds fantastical but it is based in the real world. Rainbow has such a way of creating characters that you can’t help but fall in love with and want to be friends with.
4. The Young Elites by Marie Lu
In a revision of history, after the blood fever in the middle ages, the children who survived are left with scars. Some were left with mysterious powers. They call themselves the Young Elite. Adelina is one of them. The blood fever left her disfigured with a scar over her left eye. She has been shunned and abused by her father and when her powers surfaced, she’s a danger to herself and everyone else. Marie creates a world with so much atmosphere that it was easy to get lost in it. Adelina, is filled with anger about how she is treated; you feel that it’s valid. There are so many other layers of intrigue and one shocking ending, that the next book can not come too soon.
5. Cress by Marissa Meyer
I really do love the Lunar Chronicles. A retelling of fairy tales with an alien twist. I think they are really clever and the characters are so likable. Cress is a take on Rapunzel. She is a lunar and is hidden away in a satelite so she can spy on Earth for Queen Levana. She is rescued from her prison but of course things don’t go as planned. She and Throne crash land in the desert. Cinder seeks the doctors help for wolf, who is injured and Scarlet is captured by the Lunars. Oh, and they only have a few days to stop Prince Kai from marrying Queen Levana. I’m kind of mad that I have to wait until October or November for Winter, the final book but I’m sure it will be worth the wait.
6. Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo
In the final book of the Grisha Trilogy, the Darkling has taken over Ravka and only Alina, the Sun Summoner can stop him. I feel in the past, I have been too hard on Alina, especially how she treated Mal in the last book. It really started to get me to think how far more critical we are on female characters then we are of male. Alina, is a young girl who discovers she has a frightening power that can save them or destroy them. It is a lot to take in. She needed someone to understand and for a while, the Darkling was really the only one who could or so she thought. It is a fitting ending to a dark series. I felt like all the stories were wrapped up right and they all found some kind of peace.
7. Unmade by Sarah Rees Brennan
Part Gothic Novel, part Nancy Drew. Not your usual combination but it worked for the whole trilogy. It was funny, scary and heartbreaking without missing a beat. It was also one of the rare YA novels that not all of the main characters get a happy ending. I sometimes feel that authors feel they have to keep them alive or they will upset their readers but lets be honest. That’s not realistic. How many near death experiences can one character live through? Kami is smart, resourceful and brave and really someone I would love to be friends with. I’m going to miss this series but I am happy with how it ended.
8. Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor
Yet another conclusion to a fantastic Trilogy. Excluding the last half of the first book, this series grabbed me and never let me go. It was heartwarming and heartbreaking. The sacrifices that had to be made were real gut punchers but necessary. In the end Karou and Akiva achieved what they set out to do and a surprising relationship for Liraz was perfect.
9. Firebug by Lish McBride
Firebug doesn’t have the clever names as Lish’s other books but has the sense of humor and urgency. Set in the same world as Hold Me Closer, Necromancer and Necromancing the Stone (see what I mean about those titles) but in Maine and not Seattle. Ava is a firebug, a rare gift. She is forced to work for the Coterie, a magical mafia. When she refuses to kill a family friend, she and her team, Locke, a dryad, and Ezra, a werefox, go on the run. It really is funny. Lish has such a great sense of humor that comes out in such surprising ways. I can’t wait for the next one.
10. Raging Starr by Moira Young
Apparently 2014 was the year to end trilogies. This is the last book in the Dust Lands series. A dystopian series that goes beyond what the Hunger Games did. Miss Young has no problems killing off characters or being seduced. Saba has found her brother and reunited with Jack and is now ready to take down DeMalo. The problem is that Saba does not disagree entirely with what DeMalo is trying to do. Maybe not with how he is going about it and it puts her in direct conflict with both Jack and her brother, Lugh. I really had no idea where this series was going to take me and it was quite a ride.
Books I loved so much, that I read the whole series:
A Song of Ice and Fire aka A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
Ok so I technically haven’t finished all the books that are out. I just started A Dance of Dragons. Also, I did take a 8-month hiatus to watch the series and then read other things but I do love this series. It’s so rich and challenging. So many characters and places and plots. How does he keep them all straight?
Obsidian, Onyx, Opal, Origin and Opposition. The Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Daemon is a jerk and I love him for it. He is also loyal and will do anything for his family and the ones he loves. So the jerk with a heart of gold. Obsidian got me hooked and well, I immediately bought the other books. Were they the best books I’ve read this year. No but damn, they were entertaining.
Legend, Prodigy and Champions by Marie Lu
I’ve been wanting to read these for a while and finally gave in and I’m glad. June and Day are perfectly matched heroes, The ending was bittersweet but it did leave us with some hope.
Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door and Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins
Sometimes you just need a couple of good romances. It’s really not a series but three companion novels that happen to have overlapping characters. Anna is a new girl in an American high school in Paris, who falls for the charming St. Clair. Lola is a girl who knows exactly what she wants, except when it comes to Cricket, who lives next door and Isla has been in love with Josh, all for years of school but was to shy to do anything about it until a chance meeting over the summer. Isla is my favorite with Anna close second. Lola is ok but I just didn’t relate to her as much as the other two. If you are looking for a sweet story with a lot of heart, you couldn’t do much better then these three.
Etiquette and Espoinage, Curtsies and Conspiraces, and Waistcoasts and Weaponry. The Finishing Series by Gail Carriger
Sophronia is a handful for her mother. Always getting into trouble so when she is accepted into a prestigious finishing school, she’s sent packing. However, this is no ordinary finishing school. Not only do they teach the finer points of being a lady, they also teach the best ways to hide weapons in your skirts and what is the best poison to use. All for Queen and Country, of course. This steampunk look at Victorian Englad is full of humor that I did literally laugh out loud.
We have the Best Friends Ever!

We have great friends. They know us so well. So when my friend Melissa went to a signing of Maggie Stiefvater at Prairie Lights in Iowa City, She got me and Kate signed copies too. The signing was in July but since it and Melissa are in Iowa and Kate and I are in the state of New York. It took a while to get here. I didn’t care that I had to wait for it. I had already bought my own copy and had read it. Just knowing that Melissa thought to get copies for us was all I needed to know. Thank you again, Melissa.
I may have mentioned my love for Maggie before but just in case, I LOVE HER! She’s is one of my favorite authors. I love the way she writes. It’s almost melodic. I don’t think anyone tells stories the way she does. I don’t think you can even compare what she writes to anyone else either. Her stories are unique and at times hard to explain. I truly believe that if she wasn’t a YA novelist, she would be considered a top literary novelist. She truly doesn’t get the credit she deserves.
For those not familiar with Sinner. Sinner is a stand alone companion novel to the Wolves of Mercy Falls series. Shiver, Linger and Forever follows Grace, Sam, Cole and Isabel transform in out and of wolf form. A completely different take on werewolves, that has nothing to do with the moon. At the end of Forever, it left the budding and very complicated relationship of Cole and Isabel a little up in the air with Isabel moving to California. They are both easily fan favorite characters, so the moment Maggie announced this book, you could hear the fandom scream. After Forever came out, Maggie said she would never write another book about Mercy Falls again. That the story is complete and it is at least for Grace and Sam but I think, like many, I felt that Cole and Isabel’s story was unfinished. I’m pleased that they finally got they ending. It wasn’t a fairy tale ending but was perfect for them.
So go out and read her books! All of them! I promise you, you won’t regret them!
