This is my favorite book by Maggie Stiefvater and feels like a good time to revisit it. After all. “It is the first day of November and so, today, someone will die.” Second favorite opening sentence, I think, of a book written in English. Anyone else have favorite opening sentences?
“The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning.” – Ian Fleming, Casino Royale

Ooh, that’s a good sentence. I like that!

The Young Bond YA series has a line similar to it even though it’s not the very first sentence of the book. The author Charlie Higson infused his prose with plentiful nods to the Fleming books. This is the line that introduces young James Bond:
“The smell and noise and confusion of a hallway full of schoolboys can be quite awful at twenty past seven in the morning.”
I wrote an overview of the Young Bond series for a literary Bond blog a few years ago if you care to check it out.
